Our otherwise friendly citizens of our little island know better, but don't act better. Is there a solution?
I hope this space can connect with you, the reader and citizen of Cyprus, and allow for various people to engage in a way that’s current and interesting. Think of it as an ongoing conversation where you can share updates about various goings on in our little island, and more
Well first of all
“The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference.” - Elie Weisel
Do not forget that every person, when alone (yes, you too!) acts slightly or completely different than in a crowd, as an unknown member of a mob, with their strange and wacky family members that give you those ever-so cringy bad jokes, and so on. But the most important thing to understand about these people of our fair community is that this is the way they have been brought up, but also, our very basic instincts compell us to act in this way. So, having gotten nowhere, is there now a solution to this?
The "Hey, I don't want to get my car dirty" syndrome
Now I wouldn't say that I am an incredible vehicle fan, but I so enjoy a good journey to somwhere new. As for the cleanliness of my car I must say that its absolutely deplorable. Even though I go around collecting litter every now and then, which leads to a pileup of empty plastic bottles and scraps of indistinguishable plastic packaging, I still manage to take it home or to the nearest bin and dispose of it properly. I have personally met people on our wonderful island that just throw anything out the window the first chance they get. To this I say, you can well enough wait untill you get home, or even to the nearest bin. There's no excuse for lazyness.
I once had the pleasure of working with a cleaning crew as one of my first jobs. They would keep it in the company car untill they got back to HQ, where they would clean up the van, and head off to the next job ready to do the same thing. This is an action we can all learn from, the end goal as always is to be a shining beacon of love for our planet. But this is not a solution.
We cannot fix the human condition

The gradual and altering force
Let me suggest something crazy here. What if we don't try to change people, but change whats causing the issue? Having items in plastic packaging and bleached paper, cotton cigarette butts and so on, is the biggest mistake that the modern manufacturing system has made for the environment. Granted that the properties of such a material assist in many process engineering issues, but come on. If we simply change the packaging to something more environmentally friendly, this would solve the litter issue.
The scientits and industrialists of this age could very well adopt environmentally friendly methods, you could definately its just that theres a general apathy, meaning that unless the entire island gets up off the dinner table one monday evening, and decides to walk down to some busy street to protest, noone will be interested...at all. Therefore it is imperative we make our position clear, and enforce research into the areas of product design, and find a cure all for plastic packaging and the like. This would take years, and some compremising on all sides, but it all starts with some change in policy.
